Docents guide your students through our museum as they breathe life into the past.

Standard tours run 1 hour in length and conform to GSE curriculum. Prices below.

  • SS2H1: Describe the lives and contributions of historical figures in Georgia history.
    • a. James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia)
    • b. Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee syllabary)
  • SS2H2: Describe the Georgia Creek and Cherokee cultures of the past in terms of tools, clothing, homes, ways of making a living, and accomplishments.
  • SS2G2: Describe the cultural and geopgraphic systems associated with the historical figures in SS2H1 and Georgia's Creek and Cherokee in SS2H2.
  • SS2E3: Explain that people usually use money to obtain the goods and services they want and explain how money makes trade easier than barter.

  • SS3H1: Describe early American Indian cultures and their development in North America.
    • b. Compare and contrast how American Indians in each region used their environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter. 
  • SS3H2: Describe European exploration in North America

  • SS3G3: Describe how physical systems affect human systems.
    • a. Explain why American Indian groups occupied the areas they did (SS3H1a), with emphasis on why some developed permanent villages and others did not.

  • SS4H3: Explain westward expansion on American Indians; include the Trail of Tears, Battle of Little Bighorn, and the forced relocation of American Indians to reservations.
  •  S4P3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the relationship between  balanced and unbalanced forces. 
    • c. Ask questions to identify and explain the uses of simple machines (lever, pulley, wedge,  inclined plane, wheel and axle, and screw) and how forces are changed when simple  machines are used to complete tasks.

2nd and 3rd grade tours include 4 15-minute stations, one of which is a short film. 4th grade includes 3 20-minute stations, one of which is a short film.

  • Ironworks: one of our blacksmiths will discuss the history of iron in Georgia, including the manufacture of iron and the operations of iron mills
  • Pioneer Music: one of our docents will teach your students about pioneer music, including demonstrations such as the dulcimer and the spoons
  • Log Cabin Life: one of our docents will discuss what it was like to live in a log cabin, including typical chores for children
